Hawaii Island public schools to close Wednesday and Thursday due to Hurricane Madeline

HAWAII ISLAND –With Hurricane Madeline expected to maintain its strength as it approaches the state, the Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) will close public schools on Hawaii Island on Wednesday, Aug. 31 and Thursday, Sept. 1. Closures are being made in anticipation of severe weather. All other schools in other counties will remain open until further notice.

Additionally, all Hawaii Island inter-scholastic athletic events and student activities are canceled on Wednesday and Thursday.

Many HIDOE schools serve as emergency shelters; however, County Civil Defense agencies determined which schools are activated shelters.

Hawaii County has designated the following schools as activated shelters starting today at 5 p.m.:
  • Hilo High
  • Honokaa High
  • Kalanianaole Elementary and Intermediate
  • Kau High
  • Keaau High
  • Kealakehe High
  • Kohala High
  • Konawaena High
  • Laupahoehoe Public Charter School
  • Mountain View Elementary
  • Pahoa High
  • Waiakea High
  • Waikoloa Elementary
  • Waimea Middle
